About Rex

Rex has been practicing architecture for nearly 35 years, the first third of which he spent in design, document production, and construction administration. Rex initially began specifying hardware nearly 25 years ago, and since 1996 has devoted his professional time exclusively to doors and hardware, especially the design and installation of specialized configurations conceived by designers and demanded by clients. As a long-time in-house resource, Rex provided both door and hardware specifications and detailing assistance to Gensler’s eight western regional offices, and he served as a door and hardware consulting resource to Gensler’s central and eastern regional offices as well. Most recently, Rex oversaw all aspects of doors and hardware for Renzo Piano’s Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and for a 14-gate expansion of John Wayne Airport.

Unique among hardware consultants, Rex comes from the design side of the business and not the door hardware industry side, meaning he brings to bear on every project his understanding of design and his years of experience leading architectural design and production teams. He is studious of Building Fire and Life Safety Codes, Government Guidelines, Health Codes, the National Electrical Code, Miami-Dade Hurricane Codes and ADA requirements as they all relate to doors and hardware. In addition to selecting and specifying doors and hardware, Rex efficiently works with project teams detailing complex designs, and he’s responsive to cost and constructability issues from schematic design through construction. He has written detailed seequence of operation descriptions for complex electric door security configurations, and has extensive experience with corporate and executive security, and both the Transportation Security Authority (TSA) and U.S. Customs and Boarder Patrol security requirements for airports. Rex has experience working on nearly all project types, including high-rise office buildings, civic, aviation, higher ed, institutional, commercial, broadcasting, retail and historic renovation projects.
